Apps
Brain
Pages and databases shared across an organization, in the Brain app and over the API and MCP.
Brain is an organization's shared set of pages: docs, notes and runbooks, and databases of rows with typed properties. Open it at brain.dev.gov.vin or from the app switcher. Old Cloud links to /<org>/docs/<page> redirect there.
Access
Every member of an organization can open its pages. What they can do follows their role's scopes:
| Scope | Allows |
|---|---|
knowledge:read | Open, search and favorite pages. |
knowledge:write | Create, edit, move, trash, restore and permanently delete pages; upload images and files; change database properties, views and rows. |
Share on a page copies its link. There's no per-page sharing: anyone in the organization with knowledge:read can open the link, and editing follows their role. See Roles and scopes.
Workspaces
The app opens the organization you used last (else the platform organization, else your first). Switch organizations from the sidebar's workspace menu. The home page lists your favorites and recently edited pages.
Pages
A page has a title, an optional emoji icon and block content: text, headings, lists, quotes, code, images, files and the other blocks of the editor. Pages nest: Add page inside from a page's menu creates a subpage. Move to… moves a page and its subpages under another page or to the top level; in the sidebar you can also drag a page above or below another, or onto it to put it inside.
Images and files dropped, pasted or uploaded into a page are stored with it (up to 20 MB each). Anyone who can open the page can open its files; they're deleted with the page.
Page history (in the page menu) lists the saved versions of a page's content from the last 30 days. Pick one to read it and Restore this version to make it the newest; restoring is a save like any other, so the version it replaced stays in the history.
The editor saves as you type, one second after you stop or every ten seconds while you keep typing. Content is stored as blocks plus a Markdown copy; a page's stored content can be up to 1 MB, and the editor stops saving and tells you when it's over.
Pages are edited together in real time: everyone with the page open sees the others' changes and cursors as they type. If the page is changed another way while it's open (through MCP or by restoring a version), the editor reloads with that content. Where co-editing isn't available, a save over someone else's stops with This page was changed somewhere else.: reload to get their version, or keep your copy and replace theirs.
Databases
A database is a page whose children are rows. Each row is itself a page, with values for the database's properties and its own content.
| Property type | Values |
|---|---|
text | Text, up to 2,000 characters. |
number | Any finite number. |
select | One option. |
multi_select | Any number of options. |
date | A date. |
checkbox | On or off. |
url | A link. |
relation | Links to pages of another database (or the same one), up to 100. |
A new database starts with a Tags multi-select. Add, rename, retype or remove properties from the column headers; a database can have up to 50 properties and a select up to 100 options, each with an optional color. Changing a property's type, or the database a relation links to, clears the values stored under the old one.
Views
A database can have up to 20 saved views, shown as tabs above it:
- Table: rows and columns. Sort by any column from its header.
- Board: a column per option of a select property (pick which one with Group by), plus one for rows without a value. Drag a card to another column to change its value.
- Calendar: a month grid with each row on the day of a date property.
Filter narrows a view to rows that match every condition (contains, is, is empty, greater than, before and so on, by property type). Views, their filters and their sort are saved with the database for everyone; the view you last opened is remembered in your browser.
Favorites
Add to favorites (the star, or the page menu) pins a page to the top of your sidebar and home page. Drag favorites in the sidebar to reorder them. Favorites are personal: they need only knowledge:read, and each person can have up to 200 per organization. A page in the trash can't be added.
Search
Search matches every word you type, case-insensitive, against titles and the first 4,000 characters of each page's text. Title matches rank first; results are capped at 20. Where semantic search is turned on for the platform, pages that match by meaning come first.
In a database's table view, Hide in this view on a column's menu hides it in that view only; N hidden shows it again.
Trash
Move to trash hides a page and its subpages from the tree, search and favorites. The Trash view lists trashed pages; Restore brings a page back with its subpages. Delete permanently (or Empty trash) removes a trashed page with its subpages, page history and files; it can't be undone and is recorded in the audit log.
API and MCP
- The Brain pages API lists, reads, creates, edits, moves and trashes pages, and manages favorites. Saving content takes the
baseVersionyou started from and fails with409if the page has changed since. - The MCP server has
pages_list,page_getandpage_search(withknowledge:read) andpage_upsert(withknowledge:write), so AI clients can read and write pages as Markdown. - Chat can search and read pages while answering.
